Why did you create Extra Grind?
Breaking into advertising isn’t easy. Classes can be expensive and time consuming, and often you have to know people to get your foot in the door. We find this privileges certain people while making it difficult for others. Advertising desperately needs more voices and perspectives, and opening up the industry starts with direct mentorship and opportunities to build a portfolio with other creative individuals.
We wanted to offer the Minneapolis advertising community a free way to learn outside of a traditional classroom or workplace.
How long are classes?
Classes vary in length, but most are between 60-90 minutes, once a week, for 3-7 weeks total. Class schedules are subject to weather and other conditional changes.
What’s the workload for an Extra Grind class?
Many of our classes are homework-based. We want to provide you chances to actually build something for your portfolio. Because of that, expect to spend a couple hours a week on your assignments. We’re not strict in terms of grading or evaluating—instead, we focus on thoughtful critiques of your work. In terms of time commitment, you’ll get out of a class what you put into it. How much time you spend on assignments is really up to you.
Is Extra Grind free?
Yes. We work with a roster of paying clients who allow our business to exist. This gives us freedom to provide this service to our community. We feel low-cost education is very needed in order to make advertising less homogenous.
How do you sign up?
Fill out the respective form for the class you want here.
Who is Extra Grind for?
Extra Grind is for the curious—maybe you want to know what ad school might be like, or maybe you just want to freshen up your chops. Generally, EG students are a mix of ad and marketing people looking to learn more about advertising in-depth. So far, we’ve had a mixture of college students and ad professionals looking to sharpen skills or switch departments. If you want to go from filling out forms to concepting campaigns or building brand strategies, EG can get you started. (If you’re still not sure, feel free to drop us a line and we’ll be happy to talk.)
I have to miss a class. What happens now?
Life happens. When missing a class, email your instructor as soon as you can. They might have info for you on the lesson you’re missing, or even a way for you to make up the class. It’s totally ok to miss a class or two, but once you know you’re missing a lot of classes, you might want to relinquish your spot.
How do I relinquish my spot?
Email email@example.com—you won’t lose any brownie points in our book, but you’ll probably be helping someone get off the waiting list.
How do I get off the waiting list?
Patience! If a class proves super popular, we’ll try to offer another course in the future.
How do I find out about new classes?
Follow us at @extragrindschool on Instagram for the latest info on classes.
Can I collab with people from Extra Grind Classes?
Different classes will have different working styles, but generally, you’re totally free to chat and collaborate if it makes sense. If you’re a writer looking for a design partner, try taking a design class to meet people, and vice versa.
Can other professionals teach a class?
Extra Grind is a Superhuman-run labor of love, so we’re not looking to expand beyond Superhuman instructors at this time.
Do I get a shirt?
All Extra Grind “graduates” get a shirt at their last class.
Where do I get a poster?
Email Bryce@superhuman.agency and we’ll see what we can do.
How can I get the word out?
